Minutes from HakataFukuoka Airport is two subway stops — about five minutes and ¥260 — from Hakata Station. It is plausibly the best-located major airport in the world, which is why an 'airport hotel' here is pointless. One catch: international flights use a separate terminal with no subway. From there, take the free inter-terminal shuttle (about 10 minutes, every 5–7 minutes through the day) to the subway, or the direct bus to Hakata Station — ¥400, ¥380 by IC or contactless card, and cashless only. Fukuoka has no marquee monument — no surviving castle keep, no World Heritage temple in the city, no single ticket everyone queues for. Its best-loved sights are a lakeside park, a shrine and the food floors of its main station. That is not a failure — it's the brief. You come to Fukuoka to eat at the source (Hakata tonkotsu ramen, motsunabe, yatai counters after dark), to feel a young, walkable city, and to use the best-connected base in Kyushu. Plan it as a food-and-base city and it over-delivers; hunt monuments and you'll be gone by noon.

Is Fukuoka affected by the 2026 Kumamoto earthquake?
No — the July 2026 quake hit Kumamoto Prefecture, well to the south, and Fukuoka city and the northern day trips we rank (Dazaifu, Yanagawa, Itoshima, Kitakyushu, Nagasaki) were not the disrupted zone. How do I get around?
Three subway lines (Kūkō, Hakozaki, Nanakuma) from ¥210, a ¥150 flat-fare bus zone in the centre — guides still print ¥100; that ended in 2021 — and a core so compact you'll walk more than you ride. Subway gates take contactless Visa, Mastercard, JCB and Amex directly, capped at ¥640 a day on the same card. Details: getting around.
Where should I stay?
Hakata for logistics (station, airport, temple circuit), Tenjin or Daimyo for nightlife — the subway stops around midnight and the bars run to 3am, which settles it for night owls. Gion gives the most atmosphere per yen. The full decision: where to stay.
How many nights do I need?
Two nights covers the city itself — that's the honest answer. But ask 'how long for Fukuoka plus day trips plus a Hawks game or sumo' and four to six nights is the better trip. The reframe that changes the answer: how many nights.
Are the yatai worth it?
Yes — done right. The disappointed visitors are mostly the ones who default to the busiest, most photographed row. Favour Tenjin and Nagahama over the Nakasu riverside, ask prices before ordering, carry cash, expect a one-drink minimum. A 2023 Fukuoka City study put average spend at ¥1,923 (~$13). What's the one unmissable thing?
A SoftBank Hawks baseball night at the PayPay Dome — the 2025 Japan Series champions, playing in front of one of the loudest crowds in Japanese sport, with cheap seats in the low thousands of yen. When should I go?
October–November is the sweet spot: dry, 20°C, sumo in November and the ginkgo turning at Kushida Shrine. May is the runner-up. Yamakasa (1–15 July) is spectacular and books out the city; hotel sellout dates and month-by-month detail: best time to visit.
