A castle moat that became the city's living room

A city whose favourite sight is a park sounds like an insult; spend a morning here and it reads as a boast nobody needed to make. The 2.0 km loop is measured and marked — you'll share it with runners pacing laps — a willow-lined causeway crosses the pond over three islets, and the whole thing floats between Tenjin's towers and the castle's stone walls. It is the correct sight for a city whose pleasures are atmospheric rather than monumental.
The add-ons, priced: swan boats ¥1,200 (~$8) per 30 minutes for the small two-adult boat or ¥1,600 (~$10.65) for the large one that takes four adults, rowboats ¥800 (~$5.35), all from the Boat House. The Ohori Park Japanese Garden on the south side is ¥250 (~$1.65), ¥120 for under-15s — a modern pond-stroll garden that's better designed than Rakusuien but half the charm-per-yen; do one or the other, not both. The lakeside Starbucks fills solid on weekends: window seats before 9:00 or after 18:00, or take it away and use the benches — same view, no wait.
Pair it properly and Ohori anchors a half-day: the castle ruins and keep-platform view are across the street, the Fukuoka Art Museum — ¥200 for Dalí, Warhol, Miró and a Kusama pumpkin — sits on the park's southeast corner, and Tenjin is a 20-minute walk back. One thing the English internet still gets wrong: the Ohori fireworks festival ended in 2018. Any site listing 2026 dates is reprinting a ghost.

With reviewers, yes — it consistently out-scores the Tower and Canal City. That says less about the park than about Fukuoka: this is a food-and-atmosphere city, and Ohori is its best atmosphere. Treat it as a morning ritual rather than a sight and it over-delivers.
When should I go?
Dawn. The loop circles open water, and in the first two hours of daylight you get mirror light, herons and runners — the single most local hour of the trip. Sunset from the west shore is the couples' slot. Midday summer heat is genuinely punishing; treat 11:00–16:00 in July–August as skip hours.
How much do the boats cost?
Swan boats are ¥1,200 (~$8) per 30 minutes for the small one (two adults and a child) or ¥1,600 (~$10.65) for the large one (up to four adults); an electric-assist large swan is ¥1,800. Rowboats are ¥800 (~$5.35) for two adults. Overtime is charged per 10 minutes, and rentals stop in bad weather. Thirty minutes is plenty — the pond is scenic, not large.
Is the Japanese garden worth the ¥250?
If you're not doing Rakusuien on the temple walk, yes — it's better designed and properly kept, and under-15s pay ¥120. Check today's hours on the Directions (Google Maps) link. If you are doing Rakusuien, skip this one; two small pay-in gardens in one trip is a collector's habit.
What happened to the Ohori fireworks festival?

How do I get there and what pairs with it?
Ohorikoen Station on the Kūkō line, exits 3 or 6, two minutes — 9 minutes and ¥260 from Hakata, 4 minutes and ¥210 from Tenjin. Pair the loop with the castle ruins and the ¥200 art museum for a half-day, then walk 20 minutes back into Tenjin for coffee — the crawl: coffee in Fukuoka.
