Five minutes to the city —
if you know which terminal you're in.
Fukuoka Airport really is five minutes and ¥260 from Hakata Station — for domestic arrivals. International flights land at a separate terminal across the runway with no subway, and the marketing line quietly skips that. Both arrivals, solved below.
Domestic arrival: go down to the subway under the terminal — two stops, about five minutes, ¥260 (~$1.75) to Hakata Station, ¥260 and 11 minutes to Tenjin. International arrival: don't take the free inter-terminal shuttle to reach that subway — take the direct Nishitetsu bus from stops 6–7 outside the international terminal to Hakata Station's Chikushi exit instead: ¥400 (~$2.70), or ¥380 by IC card or contactless card — it's fully cashless, so no coins. One vehicle instead of two. Realistic door-to-Hakata for an international arrival is 35–50 minutes including immigration; the five-minute figure belongs to domestic passengers.
The best-located major airport in the world — with an asterisk
The claim, auditedFukuoka Airport is two subway stops — about five minutes and ¥260 — from Hakata Station. It is plausibly the best-located major airport in the world, which is why an 'airport hotel' here is pointless. One catch: international flights use a separate terminal with no subway. From there, take the free inter-terminal shuttle (about 10 minutes, every 5–7 minutes through the day) to the subway, or the direct bus to Hakata Station — ¥400, ¥380 by IC or contactless card, and cashless only.
The claim survives checking. ¥260 and five minutes from gate-side to a shinkansen terminus isn't matched by Haneda, Incheon, Changi or anywhere else at this traffic level — the airport sits so close to town that it keeps a 22:00–07:00 curfew at residents' request. The asterisk: the domestic and international terminals are on opposite sides of the runway, not walkable, not connected airside, and the subway station is at the domestic terminal only. The airport's own first-timer page says it in as many words: the subway is not directly connected to the international terminal.
So the honest international arrival sequence is: land, clear immigration, then either the free ~10-minute shuttle to the domestic side and its subway — two vehicles, ¥260 — or a direct bus from the international terminal itself. To Hakata Station (Chikushi exit): ¥400, or ¥380 by IC or contactless card, and the route is fully cashless — have a card ready. To Tenjin: the Airport Express to the Nishitetsu Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal, ¥500 cash or ¥480 by IC card (it doesn't take credit cards). One vehicle, about ¥120–140 more than the shuttle-and-subway route. The reasons to shuttle across instead: your hotel sits on the subway's western arm (Ohori Park, Tōjinmachi for the dome, Momochi), or you're activating a rail pass.
A note on the curfew: no flights land or leave 22:00–07:00, so there are no red-eyes, and a badly delayed evening arrival can be diverted to another airport rather than land late. Don't book a tight morning-after connection on the last inbound flight of the night.
Airport to city, priced and timed
Every route inSubway and bus fares re-checked 6 October 2026 against the subway and Nishitetsu; journey and taxi figures are approximate. Dollar prices convert at ¥150 = $1, a round rate used across this site; the market rate in early October 2026 was nearer ¥158, so real dollar costs run a few percent lower. Treat converted figures as close, not exact.
| From | Route | Time | Cost | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic terminal | Subway to Hakata (2 stops) | 5 min | ¥260 (~$1.75) | WORTH IT |
| Domestic terminal | Subway to Tenjin (5 stops) | 11 min | ¥260 (~$1.75) | WORTH IT |
| International terminal | Direct bus to Hakata Station (cashless) | ~15–20 min | ¥400; ¥380 IC/contactless | WORTH IT |
| International terminal | Airport Express bus to Tenjin | 30–40 min | ¥500 cash / ¥480 IC | DEPENDS |
| International terminal | Free shuttle + subway | ~25–30 min total | ¥260 | DEPENDS |
| Either terminal | Taxi to Hakata | 15–20 min | ¥1,500–1,600 (~$10–11) | DEPENDS |
| Either terminal | Taxi to Tenjin | 20–30 min | ¥2,100–2,200 (~$14–15) | DEPENDS |
The taxi earns its fare for two-plus people with luggage bound for Hakata — it's competitive with two subway fares plus the hauling. Solo, the subway wins every time. The free inter-terminal shuttle runs every 5–7 minutes through the day on the airport's published timetable, thinning out late in the evening; the ride is about 10 minutes.

Fukuoka Airport (FUK) essentials
The airport, on one cardDeparting international: budget 90 extra minutes
LeavingFlying out internationally reverses the trap: subway to the domestic terminal and shuttle across, or the direct bus from Hakata Station's Chikushi exit. Budget roughly 90 minutes more than you would at a single-terminal airport, and more from 1 November 2026, when tax-free shopping switches to a refund system: customs must confirm your passport and tax-free purchases as you leave — and may ask to see the goods — before the shop releases your refund. Keep those purchases in your hand luggage. The one genuine airport luxury here: the city is so close you can eat a real ramen lunch in Hakata and still make a mid-afternoon flight.
Long layover instead? The airport's location makes it the best transit-day city in Japan — the playbook is on the layover page.
What everyone asks at arrivals
Questions people askIs Fukuoka Airport really 5 minutes from the city?
From the domestic terminal, yes — two subway stops and about five minutes to Hakata Station for ¥260. From the international terminal, plan 35–50 minutes door-to-Hakata once immigration and either the shuttle or the direct bus are counted. The five-minute line is true for domestic passengers only.
How do I get from the international terminal to Hakata Station?
Take the direct Nishitetsu bus from stops 6–7 outside the terminal to Hakata Station's Chikushi exit: ¥400 (~$2.70), or ¥380 by IC or contactless card — the route is fully cashless, so have a card ready. The alternative — free shuttle to the domestic terminal, then subway for ¥260 — is cheaper by a little over ¥100 but takes two vehicles.
Do I need an airport hotel in Fukuoka?
No — this is the one city where the airport hotel is pointless. Hakata Station is five subway minutes from the domestic terminal, hotels there run ¥8,000–13,000 midrange, and you can leave for the airport after breakfast. The comparison: where to stay.
Can I store luggage at the airport or station?
Hakata Station has coin lockers, including suitcase-sized ones, and the airport has lockers too — prices vary by size, so check at the bank. For multi-day side trips, hotel-to-hotel luggage forwarding (takkyūbin) is the easy move: usually next-day within Kyushu, priced by size and distance.
Is there a train between the two terminals?
No — no train, no airside link, no walkway. The free shuttle bus is the connection: about 10 minutes, every 5–7 minutes through the day on the airport's published timetable, less often late in the evening. Build a little slack around it in both directions.
What time is the first subway — can I make an early flight?
Subway service starts around 05:30, which comfortably makes any departure — the curfew means nothing leaves before 07:00. Going the other way, the last subway from the airport is around 00:25, academic since nothing lands after 22:00.
