Take JR from Hakata toward Kokura and on to Mojiko — roughly 95 minutes and ¥1,730 (~$11.55) each way on conventional trains; the 16-minute shinkansen to Kokura is faster but isn't covered by any JR Kyushu pass. Spend the day on Mojiko's two-kilometre waterfront of restored Meiji and Taisho buildings, eat yaki-curry at ¥800–1,200 (~$5.35–8), climb the 103-metre observation room for ¥300 (~$2), and walk the Kanmon pedestrian tunnel to Honshu — 780 metres, about 15 minutes, free on foot, with a painted prefectural border mid-way. Kyushu to Honshu, on foot, for nothing

The Kanmon pedestrian tunnel runs under the Kanmon Strait between Moji on the Kyushu side and Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi. It's about 780 metres, takes roughly 15 minutes at a normal pace, and is free for pedestrians — cyclists pay a token sum and must push. Lifts take you down at each end. Halfway across there's a painted line marking the prefectural border, and photographing yourself standing in two prefectures at once is the entire tradition. We could not confirm the current opening times against a live official source, so check the notice board at the Jindo-guchi entrance before you commit to a return crossing.
Getting to the entrance from Mojiko Retro is a short bus ride or a walk of about 20 minutes. The alternative crossing is the Kanmon Kisen ferry from Mojiko to Karato, roughly five minutes and about ¥400 (~$2.65) — again, treat that fare as indicative rather than quoted. The neat move is to walk one way and ferry back, which gives you the tunnel, the strait from the water, and a lunch on the Shimonoseki side.
That Shimonoseki lunch has one hard rule attached. Karato Market is Japan's fugu capital, and its famous sushi-and-sashimi stall battle runs at weekends and public holidays — roughly Friday through Sunday, mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Turn up on a Tuesday and you'll find a quiet wholesale market and a wasted crossing. The days and hours are the single most important fact for anyone planning this combination, and they are also the detail we'd most want you to reconfirm the week you travel.

One scheduling rule for all of these: check each venue's hours and closing days on its Directions (Google Maps) link before you build the day around it — the market and the museums don't keep weekend-tourist hours. For Mount Sarakura, the free shuttle now runs from JR Yahata Station, since the paid Kokura route ended on 29 March 2026.
That Mojiko hotel you saw is not in Fukuoka
The trapWorth flagging because it is currently catching people: Hoshino Resorts opened BEB5 Mojiko on 24 July 2026, from around ¥6,600 (~$44), and it has been widely written up as a Fukuoka opening. It is in Kitakyushu, about 75 kilometres from Fukuoka city. Same prefecture, different city, and roughly 95 minutes apart by train. If you book it expecting to walk to a yatai afterwards, you have booked a different trip. It's a fine base for a Mojiko-and-Shimonoseki overnight — just know which overnight you're buying. The related trap is the rail pass. Hakata to Kokura is the Sanyo shinkansen, operated by JR West, and no JR Kyushu pass covers it — plenty of visitors discover this at the gate. Either take the conventional Kagoshima main line (slower, covered, ¥1,730 to Mojiko, ~$11.55) or budget the shinkansen fare separately. As for whether to base the day on Mojiko or Kokura: Mojiko is the reason to come — the architecture, the tunnel, the curry, the strait. Kokura is the transport hub with a reconstructed castle, a covered market and the monorail, and it earns its place as the dinner stop before Sarakura's night view. The efficient shape is Mojiko in the afternoon, Kokura for dinner, Sarakura after dark, then the 16-minute shinkansen home.
