Two nights covers Fukuoka the city: the ¥650 (~$4.35) temple circuit, Ohori Park, one big evening at the yatai, one at a motsunabe table. But that's the answer to the wrong question. Ask 'how long for Fukuoka plus Dazaifu, Nagasaki, Beppu and a Hawks game or November sumo' and the honest answer is four to six nights from one hotel — one check-in, no repacking, and every day trip leaves from Hakata or Tenjin. The number of nights is a function of how you frame the trip, not of the city.
Why the experts give two different answers

Asked 'how many days should I spend in Fukuoka?', the seasoned answer is two — the modal expert recommendation, usually phrased as 'two nights would suffice, add one for Yanagawa.' Asked 'is 6 days right for Fukuoka plus sumo plus day trips?', the same experts say yes without hesitation, and start listing trips: Kitakyushu, Nagasaki, Yanagawa, Dazaifu. Both answers are correct. They're answers to different questions.
The resolution: Fukuoka-the-sights is a two-day city, and Fukuoka-the-base is a week. Most of the popular 'Fukuoka' tours physically leave the city — commercially, this is a day-trip hub with a great food scene attached. So decide your night count by counting day trips, not sights: two nights, plus one per trip you actually want, capped where the trips stop being day trips — Beppu and Yufuin lean overnight, and Kagoshima, reachable again by shinkansen since 18 September 2026, is an overnight, not a day trip (dated status).
One structural note that shapes every count: the yatai set up after dark and the subway stops around midnight, so every evening is spoken for and every extra night is another counter. Fukuoka Airport is two subway stops — about five minutes and ¥260 — from Hakata Station. It is plausibly the best-located major airport in the world, which is why an 'airport hotel' here is pointless. One catch: international flights use a separate terminal with no subway. From there, take the free inter-terminal shuttle (about 10 minutes, every 5–7 minutes through the day) to the subway, or the direct bus to Hakata Station — ¥400, ¥380 by IC or contactless card, and cashless only.

Questions people askIs 2 days enough for Fukuoka?
For the city, yes — the temple circuit is 3.5 km and ~75 minutes of walking, Ohori Park is a morning, and the evenings run themselves once the yatai set up after dark. Two days is the usual expert answer for Fukuoka alone. It's not enough if any day trip is on your list — add a night per trip.
Is 3 nights too many?
No — three buys the city plus one clean day trip. Make it Dazaifu (30–40 min on Nishitetsu from Tenjin, changing at Futsukaichi, half a day, back mid-afternoon with your yatai evening intact) or a Hawks game. Don't try to stack Dazaifu AND Yanagawa into the same day unless you're on the Dazaifu–Yanagawa ticket and happy to rush.
Is Fukuoka a good base for exploring Kyushu?
The best one — about three-quarters of Kyushu's foreign arrivals come in through Fukuoka's airport and port, and the city's stations serve Nishitetsu (Dazaifu, Yanagawa from Tenjin), JR (Nagasaki and Beppu in about two hours from Hakata) and the shinkansen (Kumamoto well under an hour). The honest limit: Kagoshima, Takachiho and Aso are too far to day-trip — those need moving your bags.
Can I do Beppu and Yufuin in one day from Fukuoka?
Not sensibly by train — Beppu is about two hours from Hakata and Yufuin about two and a quarter, on different lines, and linking them eats the day before you've bathed in anything. Pick one, or book the one format that solves it — a coach day tour covering both. The full decision: Beppu or Yufuin.
Should I stay in Fukuoka the whole time or move around Kyushu?
Four to five nights: stay put — the base strategy wins on hotel logistics and Fukuoka's evenings are the best in Kyushu. Six or more: move. The realistic split for a week is 3 nights Fukuoka plus a moving loop (Nagasaki, then Beppu or Yufuin), not 7 nights of long day trips.
How many nights if I'm adding Nagasaki?
Add one full day, and make it your first day trip while you're freshest — it's up to about two hours each way with a forced change at Takeo-Onsen from the Relay Kamome to the Kamome shinkansen, ¥6,490 (~$43) each way at regular reserved fares, and a day trip leaves time for roughly two sights (the Atomic Bomb Museum and Peace Park, realistically). If Nagasaki is a priority rather than a box, give it an overnight instead.
Where should I sleep for a short stay?
