Three islands sit within an hour or so of central Fukuoka and they answer different questions. Nokonoshima is the flower island: ¥1,200 (~$8) for the park, a ¥230 (~$1.55) ten-minute ferry from Meinohama, and its two real seasons are rapeseed in March–April and cosmos in October–November — not nemophila, which grows at Uminonakamichi. Ainoshima is the cat island: about 200 cats, 280 people, a ¥460 (~$3.05) ferry, cash only, and no shop or vending machine anywhere. Shikanoshima is the gold seal's discovery site and an 11 km coastal cycle. Budget a half day each, and check the season first.
The flower island — and the rapeseed correction

Start with the correction, because it changes trips: Nokonoshima Island Park's spring flower is rapeseed — the big yellow canola field — with cherry blossom alongside it in late March and April. It is not nemophila. The blue baby-blue-eyes field circulating under Noko's name belongs to Uminonakamichi, across the bay. Noko's own signature is autumn: cosmos through October and November, which is the strongest photographic season and the one Japanese visitors come for.
The full calendar: daffodils in January and February, rapeseed and cherry March into April, poppies and marigolds April–May, sunflowers July–August, cosmos October–November. Between those peaks the park is a well-kept slope with a sea view and a small petting zoo, and ¥1,200 (~$8) plus three hours of travel is a lot to pay for it. Park hours are 9:00–17:30 on weekdays and 9:00–18:30 at weekends and holidays, with winter on weekday hours.
Getting there is four legs and worth reading twice: Kūkō line to Meinohama (about 13 minutes, ¥300 / ~$2 from Hakata), Nishitetsu bus 98 from the north exit to the ferry terminal (~15 minutes), the ferry to Noko (~10 minutes, ¥230 / ~$1.55 one way, ¥460 / ~$3.05 return, roughly hourly), then the island bus to the park (~13 minutes). Door to door runs 75–90 minutes each way, so a half day is the floor — call it five hours. Bikes rent on the island if you'd rather ride the 12 km circumference.

If you have one half-day and no strong season signal, take Uminonakamichi — it is not an island but it is on the same water, it works in more months, and it has an aquarium for when the weather turns. The seasonal case for each: best time to visit.
The cat island, and the rules that matter
AinoshimaAinoshima belongs to Shingu-machi, technically outside Fukuoka city — about 60–70 minutes door to door, roughly ¥2,000 (~$13.35) of transport, and about 200 cats among 280 human residents. There is no bookable product for it anywhere, which is part of the appeal.
Feeding is strictly prohibited: residents manage the cats' diet and outside food causes health problems. Petting is fine. Chasing them or picking them up is not.

ShikanoshimaJoined to the mainland by the Umi-no-Nakamichi causeway, so it is an island you can cycle to.
In February 1784 a farmer named Jinbei, repairing an irrigation ditch on Shikanoshima, turned up a 2.3 cm block of gold under a stone: the seal sent by Han Emperor Guangwu to the king of Na in 57 AD, and the earliest physical evidence of Japan in the written record. Kin-in Koen — Gold Seal Park — marks the discovery site. Manage the expectation carefully: it is a monument and a sea view. The object itself is in Momochi for ¥200 (~$1.35), and you should see it there: the City Museum.
What makes Shikanoshima worth a day is the riding. An 11 km coastal loop circles the island on quiet roads, the causeway connects it to Uminonakamichi's cycle paths, and Shikaumi Shrine — the head shrine of every Watatsumi sea-god shrine in Japan, with a shell mound and a genuinely ancient maritime cult attached — sits on the way round. TripAdvisor has the island at 4.1 from 233 reviews, which for a place with no attraction to speak of tells you what people actually do here.
One honesty note on access. Municipal ferries run from Hakata Pier and Bayside Place, and buses cross the causeway from Saitozaki Station on the JR Kashii line. The ferry has historically run about 30–35 minutes for roughly ¥690 (~$4.60) one way, but the city ferry site would not load for us and we are not going to print a fare we could not confirm — check the board at the pier. Every price on this page was checked in early August 2026 against official or primary sources. Japanese attraction prices move and English sources go stale fast; where we couldn't verify a number, we say so instead of guessing.
