Beppu or Yufuin?
One. Never both by train.
Pick Beppu: more onsen than anywhere in Japan, the steaming 'hells', and an easier train — the Sonic limited express from Hakata, about two hours, ¥6,910 (~$46) each way in a reserved seat (¥13,820/~$92 return), with unreserved cars if you just turn up. Pick Yufuin only if the ryokan village is specifically your goal, and know that its main street is crowded by midday and the Yufuin no Mori train is all-reserved and, in JR Kyushu's own words, fully booked day after day. Do not attempt both by train in one day. The one format that covers both is a coach day tour — about $45 (~¥6,750) when last checked, less than the Beppu rail fare. Both towns reward an overnight if onsen is the trip's heart.

Both in one day, by train
Hakata–Beppu is about two hours by Sonic and Hakata–Yufuin about two and a quarter, on different lines; linking the two towns eats the middle of the day before you've bathed in anything. Pick one — or hand the routing problem to a coach tour, the one format built to solve it.

The mathsThe rare case where the tour can cost less than the walk-up train ticket. Rail fares are JR Kyushu's, October 2026; the tour price is as last checked — confirm it on the listing. Dollar prices convert at ¥150 = $1, a round rate used across this site; the market rate in early October 2026 was nearer ¥158, so real dollar costs run a few percent lower. Treat converted figures as close, not exact.
Transport only — one town, self-navigated, admissions and baths on top. Unreserved seats shave ¥1,060 off the return; JR Kyushu's Japanese-language web tickets go as low as ¥2,950 each way if booked 3+ days ahead. Flexible, and the right call for an overnight.

The Yufuin no Mori problem — and the plan B
The train trapThe green sightseeing train everyone photographs is the region's classic booking regret. It runs Hakata–Yufuin twice a day each way, one round trip continuing to Beppu, about 2h15 to Yufuin — and every seat is reserved. JR Kyushu's own page says seats are fully booked day after day, and reservations open at 10:00 JST one month before travel. The train itself is the attraction, so it fills like a concert, not a commute.
Plan B, in order: the ordinary Yufu limited express (same line, no panorama windows, with unreserved seats), the expressway bus from Hakata/Tenjin (usually cheaper than the express — check current fares and times), or the coach tours above, which sidestep the problem entirely. If the Mori matters to you, set an alarm for 10:00 JST exactly one month before your date — and book the return leg in the same session. Pass holders reserve through JR Kyushu's rail-pass booking or at a JR counter.
Earthquake note, since Oita gets asked: Beppu and Yufuin are on the island's east side, far from the July 2026 Kumamoto quake zone, and the Kyushu Shinkansen through Kumamoto itself reopened end to end on 18 September 2026. Reservations open at 10:00 JST one month before travel, on JR Kyushu's train-reservation site or at a JR counter — every seat is reserved, and JR Kyushu itself says the train is fully booked day after day. Book the outbound AND return in the same session, and have the Yufu express or the expressway bus as your fallback.
Should I stay overnight instead of day-tripping?
If onsen is the point of the trip, yes — both towns are at their best after the day visitors leave, and Yufuin especially only makes sense with an evening and early morning. A day trip samples; an overnight actually bathes. The realistic pattern: base in Fukuoka 3–4 nights, then one night in your chosen onsen town.
Were Beppu and Yufuin affected by the 2026 Kumamoto earthquake?
Both are in Oita Prefecture on the east coast, well away from the July 2026 quake zone south of Kumamoto city — and even there the Kyushu Shinkansen reopened end to end on 18 September 2026. Which is better with kids?
Beppu — the hells circuit is essentially a volcanic theme park (cobalt ponds, geysers, steam everywhere), and the sand baths delight children who won't sit still in a quiet bath. Yufuin's pleasures — ryokan calm, craft browsing — are adult ones. For a family day out of Fukuoka, also weigh Uminonakamichi before committing to the long ride.
