WORTH IT Unique on earth, ¥200 for the collection, and reopened this spring

The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to modern and contemporary Asian art — about 5,000 works from 23 Asian countries and regions — and it reopened in April 2026 after a full refurbishment closure from 1 December 2025 to 31 March 2026. Collection admission is ¥200 (~$1.35), free for junior high and under; until 11 January 2027 the headline show is a South Asia special exhibition at ¥1,000 (~$6.67). It sits on floors 7–8 of Hakata Riverain, wired straight into Nakasu-Kawabata Station Exit 6 — zero outdoor walking, which makes it the best rain answer in the old town. Give it 60–90 minutes.

A remit no other museum on earth has claimed

What it is

Not Asian antiquities — living Asian art: painters, sculptors and installation artists working now, from 23 countries.

Most museums that say 'Asian art' mean Buddhas, ceramics and scrolls. This one collects what artists in Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, India, the Philippines and China have made since roughly the 19th century — roughly 5,000 works, built through the museum's own Asian Art Triennale and its artist residencies. It is the only institution in the world with that specific mandate, which is a genuine claim rather than a marketing one, and almost nobody comes.

The 2026 news competitors haven't caught: the museum shut completely for refurbishment from 1 December 2025 to 31 March 2026 — galleries, auditorium, café and shop — and has been open again since April. English guides published in that window still carry closure notices; several published since still copy them. The prices, from the museum's own visitor guide: collection galleries ¥200 (~$1.35), ¥150 for high school and university students, free for junior high and under. Special exhibitions are priced separately — the South Asia special running 19 September 2026 to 11 January 2027 on 7F–8F is ¥1,000 (~$6.67), ¥800 for students. Ask at the desk which galleries your ticket opens.

Even without a ticket you get something: the 7F Art Cafe is free to enter, holds around 10,000 books on Asian art and culture, and hosts Live@Museum performances on Friday evenings (the current run ends 30 October 2026). It is the quietest place to sit in central Hakata, and it is one lift ride from a subway platform. Anyone who has run out of temples should come here.

Anpanman charges every visitor aged 1 and over, adults included — a parent and toddler is about ¥4,400 (~$29). Japanese families rate it highly because the character is universal here; Western families with no Anpanman exposure often walk out puzzled. Ages 1–6 or skip.

The Asian Art Museum, answered

Questions people ask
Is the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum open?

Yes. It closed completely for refurbishment from 1 December 2025 to 31 March 2026 and has been open again since April. Guides written during that four-month window still say closed — they're stale, and this autumn the museum is running a full programme, including a special exhibition to 11 January 2027.

How much does it cost?

The collection galleries are ¥200 (~$1.35) for adults, ¥150 for high school and university students, and free for junior high and under, per the museum's visitor guide. Special exhibitions are priced separately: the South Asia special running to 11 January 2027 is ¥1,000 (~$6.67), ¥800 for students.

What's on right now?

From 19 September 2026 to 11 January 2027 the 7F–8F galleries host a South Asia special exhibition, part of the museum's 'how to walk through Asian art' series, at ¥1,000 (~$6.67). The museum also lists the Fukuoka Asian Film Festival, 8–12 October 2026. Today's hours are on the Directions (Google Maps) link.

Is it really the only museum of its kind?

For modern and contemporary Asian art, yes — that specific remit is unique worldwide, and the collection runs to about 5,000 works from 23 countries and regions, much of it acquired through the museum's own Triennale and residency programme.

How do I get there from Hakata Station?

Kūkō line to Nakasu-Kawabata, one transfer-free hop, ¥210 (~$1.40) and about five minutes, then Exit 6 into the building — you never step outside. Walking takes about 20 minutes through the temple district, which is the better route in good weather: the temple walk.

This or the City Museum, if I only do one?

Different pleasures for the same ¥200 (~$1.35). The City Museum has the 57 AD gold seal and the story of Japan entering the written record; this has living artists and a café you'll want to sit in. History first-timers take the gold seal; repeat visitors take this one.

Can I go without paying anything?

Yes — the 7F Art Cafe is free to enter, with around 10,000 books and Friday evening Live@Museum performances. It's the best free indoor sit-down in Hakata and nobody will ask whether you bought a ticket. More in that vein: free Fukuoka.
